Primary Care Approach to the Use of Inflammatory Indices in Hypertension: A Review

Hypertension is increasingly recognized as a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition rather than solely a hemodynamic disorder. Hematologic indices such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet- to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, systemic inflammatory response index, and aggregate index of systemic inflammation have emerged as accessible markers of systemic inflammation. Elevated levels of these indices are linked to cardiovascular risk, target organ damage, and non-dipper blood pressure patterns. Their simplicity and availability make them promising tools for early detection and risk stratification in primary care. However, standardized cutoff values and implementation strategies are still needed. This review summarizes current findings on the inflammatory basis of hypertension and the clinical utility of these biomarkers in routine practice.
