Bir iletişim aracı olarak yüzlerce yıldır kullanılan mektup, özellikle 18. yüzyıldan itibaren edebî tür olarak değer kazanmıştır. Bireyselleşmenin artmasıyla birlikte insanların kendi düşüncelerini aracısız ifade etme ihtiyacı hissetmesiyle edebî mektupların sayısında ciddi bir artış gözlemlenir. Bu dönemde Batı’da mektuplarla beraber romanın da yükselişe geçmesi, mektup-romanların doğmasını sağlar. Birçok örneği yazılan mektup-romanlarda özellikle kadınların mektuplarla seslerini duyurmaya çalıştığı gözlemlenir. Türk edebiyatında da Batı edebiyatının etkisinin başladığı Tanzimat yıllarında ilk mektup-romanların yazıldığı, Batı’da olduğu gibi bu türe ilginin fazla olduğu söylenebilir. Bu çalışmada, Vecihi’nin kaleme aldığı mektup-roman türünün ilk örneklerinden sayılabilecek ancak gözardı edilmiş Müjgan ve Mesude romanlarına odaklanılacak, bu romanlarda mektubun işlevi ortaya konacaktır. Mektup-romanın tarihine ve genel özelliklerine kısaca değinildikten sonra Vecihi’nin birbirinin devamı olan iki romanından alınan örneklerle nasıl bir mektup roman yazdığı belirtilmeye çalışılacaktır.
The letter which has been has been used as a communication tool for hundreds of years, has gained value as a literary genre, especially since the 18th century. With the increase in individualization, a serious increase is observed in the number of literary letters, as people feel the need to express their thoughts directly. In this period, the rise of the novel along with letters in the West led to the emergence of letter-novels. In the epistolary novels, many examples of which are written, it is observed that especially women try to make their voices heard through letters. It can be said that the first epistolary novels were written in the Tanzimat years, when the influence of Western literature began in Turkish literature, and there was a high interest in this genre as in the West. In this study, the ignored novels Müjgan and Mesude, which can be considered as the first examples of the epistolary novel genre written by Vecihi, will be focused on, and the function of the letter in these novels will be revealed. After briefly mentioning the history and general features of the epistolary novel, it will be tried to indicate how Vecihi wrote an epistolary novel with the examples taken from his two novels, which are the continuation of each other.
