The Kefileme Defter compiled by Mula Muhamed Mestvica in 1841 contains data from Sarajevo’s first census. The Kefileme Defter, organized by Mestvica, was prepared on the orders of Vecihi Salih Mehmed Pasha, the Governor of Bosnia. This notebook, written in Turkish, was translated into Bosnian in 1970 by Derviş Korkut, Director of the Sarajevo City Museum, under the title “Popis uzajamnog jamčenja stanovništva u Sarajevu iz 1841. godine.” Most of the Turkisms found in Balkan languages began to be adopted starting in the 15th century, when Ottoman Turkish was in use. This influence persisted throughout the Ottoman-Turkish period until the 19th century. Turkish contributed to these languages the names of places, tools, kitchen and household items, neighborhood names, words of Islamic origin, and the terminology used in bureaucracy and state tradition. Onomastics, a field of study that serves many disciplines within the social sciences, reveals the social relationships, cultural history, and linguistic realities of the societies to which they belong through the analysis of place names and personal names. The neighborhood names of Sarajevo during the Ottoman period form the main focus of our study. The neighborhood names listed in the Kefileme Defter have been examined under nine headings we established based on their semantic structures. There are ninety- nine such neighborhoods. The neighborhood names were also evaluated according to their word counts and structural characteristics. In this article, by identifying the neighborhood names in the Metvica Kefileme Register, both the classification of Sarajevo’s neighborhood names in the 19th century and an analysis of the Turkisms used in these names have been conducted.
