Bu çalışmada, tarihsel bir yaklaşımla Türkçedeki “çevirici” sözcüğü ele alınmakta ve çevirmen odaklı bir yaklaşımla sözcüğün belli dönemlerdeki kullanımı ve çeviriciye ilişkin bakış açıları ortaya konulmaktadır. Betimleyici olabilmek ve örneklendirmek amacıyla, hem çevirmen hem de gazeteci olan Oktay Akbal, Rauf Mutluay ve Burhan Arpad’ın köşe yazılarının tanıklığına başvurulmaktadır. Kuramsal çerçevede, çeviribilimci James S. Holmes’un (1972/1988) alanın kurucu ifadesi olarak tanınan “The Name and Nature of Translation Studies” adlı makalesinden ve Andrew Chesterman’ın (2009) “The Name and Nature of Translator Studies” adlı çalışmasından yararlanılmaktadır. Çalışmada “çevirici” sözcüğünün ortaya çıkışı, çeviribilim alanının kuruluşu ile gelişimi ve çevirmen odaklı çalışmaların gerekliliği üzerinde durulmaktadır.
In this study, the word of “çevirici” (“translator”) is scrutinized with a historical perspective and the use of the word in certain periods and perspectives are revealed from a translator oriented approach. With the purpose of being descriptive and providing examples, columns of Oktay Akbal, Rauf Mutluay and Burhan Arpad, who were both translators and journalists, act as witnesses. In the theoretical framework, translator scholar James S. Holmes’s (1972/1988) article called “The Name and Nature of Translation Studies” which is also accepted as the founding statement of translation studies and Andrew Chesterman’s (2009) article entitled “The Name and Nature of Translator Studies” are benefited from. This study dwells on the emergence of the word “çevirici” (“translator”), the foundation and development of translation studies and the necessity for the translator oriented studies.
