Background: Concept mapping is an active teaching strategy that can be incorporated into the educational program to prepare nursing students to work in today’s complex surgical environment. Objective: This is a quasi-experimental study conducted to determine the effectiveness of concept maps in surgical nursing education. Methods: The study was conducted with second-year students (n=112) at the School of Health of a university in the Marmara Region of Turkey in the 2023-2024 academic year. Study data were collected using the “Achievement Test for the Pre-and Post-Surgery Period” and the “Effectiveness of Concept Map in Nursing Education Scale (HEKHEÖ)”. A one-day training was given to the students participating in the study on “Pre-Operation/During/Post-Surgery Period Nursing Care”. At the end of the training, an achievement test (pre-test) was administered to the students. A concept map study was conducted for the same group of students in the school environment. After this study, the achievement test (posttest) and HEKHEÖ were applied again. IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 was used in the statistical analysis of the research. Since the data showed a normal distribution, Independent Samples t-test and Paired Samples t-test were used for statistical analyses. The magnitude of the difference between the pre-test and post-test was evaluated using Cohen’s effect size. A significance level of p < .05 was accepted. Results: The average age of the students was 21.18±1.31 years, 69.6% were women, 96.4% graduated from regular high school. The average HEKHEÖ score of the students is 89.84±19.18. According to HEKHEÖ scores, 76.8% of the students state that the concept map method used in their education is effective. There is a significant difference between the success scores before and after the concept map study (p<.001). The concept map study had a positive effect on students, students’ success scores were found to be higher. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the concept map method in the education of nursing students increases the students’ knowledge level and affects learning positively. In addition to the theoretical expression model, concept mapping studies can be used as a method for nursing students to learn the subject of surgical nursing and integrate care.
