Objective: To determine the frequency of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) in patients with type 2 Diabetes mellitus (DM). Material and Methods: Seventy-five patients with type 2 DM who were 50 years of age and over were compared for the frequency of DISH presence with forty-nine non-diabetic individuals who were matched for sex, age and body mass index. DISH was diagnosed based on radiological criteria. The diabetics and the control group were also compared for serum uric acid, total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels. Results: Although DISH was more frequent in the control group (30.6%) than in the diabetics (22.7%), this difference was not statistically significant. Among patients with a diagnosis of DISH, 62.5% were symptomatic. There was no sexual predilection among the DISH patients. Diabetics and control group were not significantly different in terms of biochemical parameters. Conclusion: There was no significant difference between diabetics and the control group for the frequency of DISH in our study. Because there are contradictory results on this topic, further studies with large populations are required. Copyright © 2006 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
