Özet
This experimental study was designed to investigate the effects of a well-known NSAID, tenoxicam, on the changes in the haemotological parameters of adjuvant arthritic rats. Adjuvant arthritis (AA) was induced by a single intradermal injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the right hind paw of Wistar rats. Four groups each containing 10 Wistar rats were included into the study. The first group received only saline and served as control for the other groups. All of the other groups received 0.1 ml of CFA at the beginning of the experiment. Groups III and IV were also treated with 0.3 mg/kg and 0.6 mg/kg of tenoxicam respectively, after the 17th day. Blood samples of 3 ml were drawn directly from heart on day 27 and the haematological parameters were observed. Haematological studies in the arthritic rats revealed a decrease in serum iron concentration, haemoglobin concentration and peripheral red blood cell count of AA rats. On the other hand, the number of lymphocytes and monocytes in the differential count, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) were increased. Tenoxicam did not change any of the haematological parameters in rats with AA at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg. At 0.6 mg/kg dose, the drug decreased the number of white blood cells (WBC) and red blood cells (RBC) and reduced the level of haemoglobin and serum iron concentration further than the results obtained with CFA alone. The results showed that tenoxicam did not aggravate the anemia in adjuvant arthritic rats at the usual dose, but may worsen the haematological parameters at higher doses.
