LATE CLASSICAL PERIOD LOCAL BOWLS FROM KLAZOMENAI

Abstract

The local bowls constitute one of the most important groups among pottery finds from Klazomenai. These bowls, as a characteristic representative of the Late Classical Period layers dated from the late 5th to mid- 4th centuries B.C., are studied under a typology based on their morphological and decorative features. These common semi-fine table wares imply that the shapes and decorative patterns of the Late Archaic Period and persisted on a large scale even during the Late Classical Period. The new features on these bowls were somewhat restricted and were apparent mainly in the second quarter of the 4th century B.C. It is determined that there were some influences of contemporary popular black-glazed Attic pottery on these local bowls in terms of the shape and the decorations. The aim of this study is to present a typology and chronology of these local bowls that are common in the Late Classical layers of Klazomenai based on the architectural phases of the settlement.
Klazomenai’da açığa çıkan seramik buluntular arasındaki en büyük kümelerden birini yerel üretimkâseler oluşturmaktadır. Yerleşimin 5. yüzyıl sonlarından 4. yüzyıl ortasına kadar tarihlenen Geç KlasikDönem evresinin en karakteristik temsilcileri arasında yer alan kâseler bu çalışmada temel form ve be-zeme özelliklerine göre oluşturulan bir tipoloji içerisinde incelenmektedir. Bu yaygın, yarı kaliteli masakapları Geç Arkaik Dönem’deki form ve bezeme şemalarının Klazomenai’da Geç Klasik Dönem’de debüyük çapta devam ettiğini göstermektedir. Bu kâselere Geç Klasik Dönem’de eklenen yeni özellikler isesınırlı boyuttadır ve genellikle 4. yüzyılın ikinci çeyreğinde ortaya çıkarlar. Dönemin yaygın siyah firnisliAttika seramiklerinin de bu kâselerin form ve bezeme sisteminde belirli etkileri tespit edilmiştir. Bu ça-lışmanın amacı Klazomenai’ın Geç Klasik Dönem tabakalarında yaygın biçimde ele geçen yerel üretimkâselerin, yerleşmenin mimari evrelerine dayanan bir kronolojik dizinini ve tipolojisini sunmaktır.
