Özet

Collagenous and lymphocytic colitis are syndromes characterized by chronic watery diarrhea with histologic evidence of chronic mucosal inflammation but normal endoscopic and radiographic evaluations. It usually occurs in middle aged patients but can affect children. Collagenous colitis is characterized by a thickened subepithelial collagenous band in colonic mucosa. In comparison, lymphocytic colitis is characterized by subepithelial lymphocytic infiltrate rather excess collagen in the colonic mucosa. Since the clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of collagenous and lymphocytic colitis are identical, many suggest that they are different manifestations of the same disease. Diarrhea is the main symptom, although its severity may fluctuate, it usually persist for months to years. No specific laboratory test is available, and the diagnosis is based up on histological assessment of the colonoscopic biopsy specimen. Literature regarding treatment of microscopic colitis is primarly anecdotal; sulfasalazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid, corticosteroids, bismuth subsalicylate, or nonspecific antidiarrheal therapy has helped some patients.
